May 21, 2007 - Mittens
Mittens: Recently I was in this area (which will remain undisclosed) looking for newborn fawns. I could see this deer off in the distance and it looked big so I licked the shutter a few times. I didn't realize just how big and incredible this guy was. Look at how his antlers take up most of his head. My daughter says it looks like it has mittens stuck on top of his head. So he now has a name, Mittens. This is the time of year when the bucks start to get their antlers and this guy has a " head start" shall we say. I'm hoping to see this deer throughout the year to monitor and record his antler growth. I'm sure he will be in the monster buck category. Just like when I was a kid I hope I don't lose my mittens

May 8, 2007 - 800 Pound Black Bear
Ely is always a favorite destination for my wife Mary and I. This weekend we decided to take in the opening of The North American Bear Center. The bear center is a result of the hard work and dedication of Lynn Rogers, a world renowned bear researcher. The center is nicely done in a way that is designed to inform you about bears. The two bears that are presently at the center are named Ted (black in color) and Honey Bear (cinnamon in color). Ted reportedly weighs 800 pounds. Honey says she's less but that's just like the ladies! Now there's another good reason to go to Ely. Not that I needed any more.
