December 31, 2006 - Grand Marais Sunset
Last week we were at Grand Marais working on our retirement home. It was cloudy all day and we were busy working around the house and not paying attention to the sunset that was developing. Before I realized it the sky started to clear and the remaining clouds turned a beautiful red. I had about ten minutes to get to the Grand Marais Harbor if I wanted to capture the sunset. I didn't know if I could make it but I had to try.

The sun was already touching the horizon, when I pulled into the parking lot. There was no time to set up the tripod so I bailed out of the car with just camera in hand. After clicking off about a half-dozen photos, the sun was gone. Then I realized that I had only 20 seconds to spare. I was very thankful that I made it in time.

December 24, 2006 - Morning Star
The attached photo is our Christmas card to you. We hope you have enjoyed our photos over the last year and that you have been encouraged by all of the beautiful places to see in Minnesota. We consider it a privilege to live in such a beautiful part of the world and to see so many sunrises. I like to start my day with the sunrise as it seems to put me in a good mood all day long.

The attached photo was taken at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The trees are on the little island below the lighthouse called Little Two Harbors. At the turn of the century there were several fishing shacks at this spot. Those early fisherman had a rough life but I can guarantee they saw hundreds of sunrises over Lake Superior and they loved their work.

I almost missed this photo because it was a very foggy morning and I thought the sun wasn't going to come through. I decided to go down to the beach anyhow and see what transpired. It wasn't long before the sun broke through the thick fog, spreading its morning rays and warming everything it touched.

Merry Christmas,

December 17, 2006 - New Beaver Dam
Adam came home for my birthday this week and we hiked up to a new beaver pond that has been constructed on Nelson's Creek. I did not notice it last year so I am sure they made the entire dam this summer. The beaver were under the ice enjoying their new home so we did not see any but we marveled at the unbelievable amount of work that they had done.

Nelson's Creek is located just up the shore from the Gooseberry River. It is a small stream that flows directly into Lake Superior. It drops quite quickly so any dam must be pretty high to back up enough water for a beaver home. This dam is six feet high and about 60 feet long. The amount of sticks and mud is pretty amazing.

December 10, 2006 - Gooseberry Falls, MN
I am not sure how many gallons of water per hour goes over the falls at Gooseberry this time of year but when the water freezes for several days you get an impressive wall of ice. I photographed the ice this week before the warm spells melts it away.

I was amazed at the noises ice can make. While water ran behind, it boomed and cracked from the tremendous pressure of the weight of the ice hanging over the rock wall. A crack where the ice began to separate is visible in the right half of one of the photos.

A family from Red Wing came by while I was taking pictures and we talked about the ice. I told them to hang around for a while and they would hear some of the ice sounds. They stayed just long enough to hear the sounds of one large crack boom across the gorge. The kids had never experienced that and were pretty impressed.
