July 24, 2007 - Caribou Trail Eagles
We are sending out "Photo of the Week" a little early because I will be heading out to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to do service projects and work with the youth in the local community. Fourteen kids are going from our church meeting up with youth from other towns. We will have over 60 youth in total so it will be a very fun and life changing week. Evening trips will bring us to Wounded Knee and parts of the Badlands. I am sure I will have photos to share when we return.

This week was the first time all summer that I made it back to my favorite eagles nest. It is located in the top of a large white pine up the Caribou Trail. The young are not so young anymore. As I was watching one chick started flapping its wings and a big gust of wind blew him right off the nest. He flapped furiously to get back to the nest grabbing onto a limb. I don't know if it was his first flight or not but it looks like it won't be long before they will be leaving the nest. I was fortunate enough to watch the adults bring in two fish. The one photo attached shows the larger of the two fish. It is hard to believe that the adult can carry a fish this large.

July 16, 2007 - Pink & White Snowy Lady's-Slippers
The Pink & White Showy Lady's-Slippers, which are the Minnesota state flower, were in bloom for one day this week. They bloom later than the Lady's-Slippers around the rest of Minnesota because of the cooler temperatures along the shore. We usually can view them for about a week in July but our resident whitetail deer love to eat the flowers as much as people like to see them.

Earlier this week the flowers bloomed during the day. I took these pictures late that evening. The next morning the deer had not only eaten the flowers but half of the plants. Many people called and asked if the lady's-slippers were blooming as they wanted to see them. They were very disappointed to hear that the deer had gotten their before they had a chance to see them.

July 1, 2007 - Lake Superior in Grand Marais
There was another full moon this week. Our lifetime only holds so many full moons and I try to slow down and take the time to watch as many as I can. We were in Grand Marais with some friends so we spent two beautiful evenings sitting on the beach in front of the Grand Marais campground. Both nights the lake was like glass reflecting the beauty of God's creation. Friday's moon came up right at sunset so it had more red effect captured by the camera.

Saturday night the moon came up about 45 minutes after sunset. By that time it was dark enough that you have to have the shutter open for about 10 to 15 seconds to capture the scene. I took one picture underexposed and one properly exposed and combined the two to get the yellow moon as it looked to the naked eye. No matter how advanced digital photography gets, it still cannot capture everything that your eye can see.
